Introduction
Hope is a scarce commodity in our world today. People hope their investments will recover, their relationships will improve, or their health will hold out, but these hopes often disappoint. Peter writes to believers who desperately need a different kind of hope—one that doesn’t depend on circumstances but on Christ’s resurrection.
This “living hope” isn’t wishful thinking but confident expectation based on what God has already accomplished and promised to complete.
I. Hope REGENERATES Us
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Peter 1:3).
Our living hope begins with spiritual regeneration—being born again through Christ’s resurrection. This new birth gives us a hope that’s alive because it’s connected to the living Christ.
II. Hope REFINES Us
“In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved in various trials, that the proof of your faith... may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor” (1 Peter 1:6-7).
Trials don’t destroy our living hope but refine it like fire refines gold. Through difficulties, our hope grows stronger and our faith becomes more genuine.
III. Hope REVEALS God’s Plan
“It was revealed to them that not to themselves, but to you, they were ministering these things, which now have been announced to you through those who preached the Good News to you by the Holy Spirit sent out from heaven” (1 Peter 1:12).
Our living hope is so magnificent that Old Testament prophets searched to understand it and angels long to examine it. We possess what previous generations only hoped to see.
