Introduction
If any passage in Scripture could be called the gospel in miniature, it is Ephesians 2:1–10. In a few short verses, Paul traces the believer’s journey from the deepest depths to the highest heights — from the grave of spiritual death to a seat with Christ in the heavenly places. And the whole movement turns on two of the most glorious words in all the Bible: “But God.” Here is the story of every Christian: what we were by nature, what God did in mercy, and what we have been re-created to become.
I. Our DEATH — Dead in Trespasses and Sins (vv. 1–3)
“You were made alive when you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world” (Ephesians 2:1–2).
Paul begins with an unflinching diagnosis of our natural condition. We were not merely sick or weak but dead in sin — enslaved to the world, the devil, and the flesh, and by nature under the wrath of God. This is the dark backdrop against which grace shines, and it must be felt before grace can be treasured.
II. God’s DELIVERANCE — Made Alive Together with Christ (vv. 4–7)
“But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ” (Ephesians 2:4–5).
Then come the two words that change everything: “But God.” Springing entirely from His own mercy and love, God acted while we were still dead — making us alive with Christ, raising us up with Him, and seating us with Him in the heavenly places. Salvation is God’s initiative from first to last.
III. Grace’s DESIGN — Saved by Grace, Created for Good Works (vv. 8–10)
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works... For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works” (Ephesians 2:8–10).
Paul then states the great summary of the gospel: we are saved by grace through faith, not by works, so that no one can boast. Yet grace does not make good works irrelevant. We are God’s workmanship, His masterpiece, re-created in Christ for the very good works He prepared for us to walk in.
