FREE PREVIEW: Introduction to 1 Peter - Living as Exiles

This is a condensed preview of this week's full Bible study lesson, available exclusively to paid subscribers.

Introduction

Peter’s first letter addresses Christians scattered throughout the Roman Empire, facing persecution and feeling like strangers in their own communities. His message remains powerfully relevant today as believers continue to live as “exiles” in cultures that are increasingly hostile to Christian values.

This letter shows us how to live faithfully in a world that doesn’t share our values, maintaining hope while experiencing hardship, and finding our identity in Christ rather than cultural acceptance.

I. IDENTITY as God’s Chosen People

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession” (1 Peter 2:9).

Peter reminds scattered believers that their true identity comes from God’s calling, not cultural acceptance. We are chosen, royal, holy, and belong to God—regardless of how the world treats us.

II. INTEGRITY in Hostile Environments

“Having good behavior among the nations, so in that of which they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they see, glorify God” (1 Peter 2:12).

Christians are called to maintain excellent conduct even when falsely accused or mistreated. Our integrity in hostile environments becomes a witness to God’s transforming power.

III. INHERITANCE Beyond This World

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an incorruptible inheritance” (1 Peter 1:3-4).

Our hope isn’t in earthly comfort or acceptance but in an eternal inheritance that cannot be destroyed. This future perspective sustains us through present difficulties.
