Introduction
Peter has called believers to holiness and described their new birth through God’s living word. Now he shows how this transformation should affect their relationships and identity. Using the powerful imagery of stones and building, Peter reveals that Christ is the living cornerstone and believers are living stones being built into God’s spiritual house.
This isn’t just beautiful metaphor—it’s practical instruction for how God’s people should live together and represent Him to the world.
I. REJECT What Hinders Growth
“Putting away therefore all wickedness, all deceit, hypocrisies, envies, and all evil speaking, as newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word” (1 Peter 2:1-2).
Spiritual growth requires removing behaviors that poison relationships and hinder maturity. Like babies craving milk, we must hunger for God’s word while rejecting attitudes that contaminate our spiritual development.
II. RECEIVE Christ as Cornerstone
“Coming to him, a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God, precious, you also, as living stones, are built up as a spiritual house” (1 Peter 2:4-5).
Christ is the living stone that gives life and stability to God’s building. Though rejected by the world, He’s precious to God and becomes the foundation for our identity and community.
III. REPRESENT God as His People
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9).
As living stones built on Christ, we become God’s holy temple with the privilege and responsibility of representing Him to the world through our character and proclamation.
